Suffixes

A suffix is a word part that comes at the end of a word. When you add suffix, you change the word's meaning.

-able,  -ible  means "can be"                                                                     
comfortable        convertible
washable            sensible
breakable           reversible

I want to buy a comfortable chair.
He is a sensible man.

-en means "to make" or "made of"                                                           
harden           frighten
lenghten        weaken
sharpen         wooden

I want to have a wooden house.
The movie was frightening.
-er means "a person who"                    

builder             writer
teacher             runner
painter             baker

A writer is a person who writes books or articles.
A painter is a person who paints pictures.
-ful means "full of"

careful                   playful
helpful                   thankful
harmful                  useful

Be careful!  There is a hole on the road.
This cat is playful.
-less means "without"

careless          priceless
helpless          sleepless
harmless         useless

A broken car is useless.
A small bird is harmless.

-ward means 'in the direction of"

eastward               southward
northward             westward
forward                 backward

To go forward means to go in the direction in front of you.
To go backward means to go in the direction in back of you.

Prefixes

A prefix is a word part that comes athe beginning of a word. when you add a prefix, you can change the meaning of the word.

bi- means "two" or "twice"      

bicentennial      bifocals
bicycle              biplane


Bifocals is a pair of eyeglasses having two such parts.
A bicycle has two wheels.
dis- means "the opppsite of"  

disappear          dishonest
disagree            dislike
disconnected 

Don't trust dishonest people.
She dislikes cats.
im-, in- mean "not"

impossible          incorrect
impatient            incomplete
imperfect            inexpensive

pre- means "before"

re- means " again" or " back"

When you read something again, you reread it.
When you put something back in its place, you replace it.
semi- means "half"
